nail-biting and swoony and satisfying and tense all at the same time' Sabaa Tahir I recommend this book to readers who like fantasy or vampires.#1 New York Times bestselling author Renee Ahdieh returns with a sumptuous, sultry and romantic new series set in 19th century New Orleans where vampires hide in plain sight. Though flawed, this book was a nice introduction to the vampire genre. Overall, it was hard for me to connect so many dispersed ideas. The antagonist explains the world of vampires and magic only in small portions. The only time the fantasy world is explained is during the antagonist’s first-person perspective chapters. It does not help that Celine, whose perspective we see for most of the book, is an outsider and doesn’t fully understand this fantasy world either. She attempts to describe the origin of vampires and other supernatural creatures in bits and pieces. Lastly, the author did not explain her fantasy world well. For example, Celine compares herself to a “queen of darkness” every chapter! Certain motifs and comparisons pop up *every page*. Second, the book is so repetitive that it is – I hate to say it – cringey. Additionally, Celine cannot make any decisions about her feelings! One moment she hates her love interest, the next she is head-over-heels in love. Although control over one’s life is a good cause, Celine allows her stubbornness to cloud her judgement. But in her attempt to prove she is an independent woman, Celine – in my opinion – makes some dumb decisions that are not in her best interests. This is especially hard for young women in 1872, which is when the book is set.

Celine strives for independence and power over her own life. To me, Celine was overly dramatic and stubborn. Though the author probably wanted Celine to come across as a strong, daring female lead, the effect was not that. However, I cannot overlook this book’s three main problems.įirst, the characters are difficult to understand, especially the main character, Celine. In addition, the author describes well the supernatural vibe of New Orleans. I will probably read the upcoming sequel. I read a new genre, and overall I liked it! There were parts where I was eager to read more and was racing through the pages.

This was my first “vampire” book, and I was pleasantly surprised. The book focuses more on the fantasy and romance aspects rather than the murder-mystery part. The Beautiful is a fantasy, murder-mystery, romance novel. As Celine gets caught up in a world of magic and vampires, she tries to catch the murderer. Celine realizes all the victims were somehow connected to her. Soon after her arrival, a series of gruesome murders occurs. However, New Orleans is not what Celine expected instead of a place of hope and safety, New Orleans is spooky, eerie, and otherworldly. She goes to New Orleans, hoping to escape her past and start a new, better future. After an ill-fated night, Celine is forced to flee her home, Paris.
